Four modern master violins by luthier Gustav Janzen are currently for sale.
Gustav Janzen is a self-taught violin maker. Born in Russia, as a 12-year old
immigrant in Brazil his dream
was to play a violin. He started as an apprentice with a European furniture
maker and learned his trade,
went to the library to get a book on violinmaking. Fiorinis' Der Verlorene Klang
(The Lost Sound) set him
on the track of thirty five years of systematic research and re-discovery in
mathematical
configurations of acoustics, well-known to the old masters such as Stradivarius
and Fiorini. The shape
and sound of the violin is not random design, but rather a relationship of
mathematics, accoustics and
tonal values. . . Leonardo da Vinci would be proud!
Sir Isaac Stern played Gustav Janzen's violin in his days and expressed that
it was a wonderful surprise to
see such excellent workmanship, to recognize such a fine hand with a knife
and to hear the mellow sound
and feel the playing ease of the instrument. He was looking forward to see how
the deep red varnish and
the qualities of the instrument would develop over time.
Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Brazil's former president João Café Filho, violinist
Jerzy Milewsky, Jimmy Carter's
cousin Ed Carter, Altea Alimonda Saye: a top violinist of São Paulo at the
time, Moyses Azulay de Castro:
Professor of violin at the Insitute of Fine Arts, Curitiba . . . all played his
violins, endorsed and
recommended the work of Gustav Janzen, as his violins: " . . . expressed purity
of sound, superb finish and
perfect tuning and timbre, such as only the great masters achieve."
He won international recognition as a master of his craft, and was awarded an
Honorary Diploma in the
International Exhibition of Coffee and Centennial Fair of Paraná 1953, Brazil;
won first prize at the Pacific
National Exhibition, British Columbia Canada 1970, earned a Diploma de
Participazione in the V Concorso
Internazionale di Luteria Antonio Stradivari Cremona 1988 published the book
Room Accoustics and Construction of
Violins 1975, among other things.
All violins would be available through Janzen's daughter. Makers certificate
available.
